Capcom Retro Game Collections Finally Shown

Goodies galore as the 1940s and Ghouls collide.

Posted by Staff
Capcom has finally lifted the lid on its plans to fully exploit its spectacular back catalogue of software, revealing two medley titles for the PSOne.

As you may remember, Capcom confirmed back in early February that it intended to make use of its world class selection of older IP. Though at the time, no specifics were offered by Hiroshi Tobisawa in his announcement.

Two titles will be offered, at first exclusive to the Japanese market. One disc will see Ghosts & Goblins, Ghouls n' Ghosts and Super Ghouls n' Ghosts - spooky platform fun at its finest. The second will be an up-shooter medley comprising 1942, 1943, 1943 Gaiden.

Both compilations come complete with an official strategy guide and will hit Japanese stores next week. A western offering is widely expected.

Yes indeed, a very sweet addition for a buy list. Super Ghost n' Ghouls is a favourite but the only prolem here is that they are on PSone. This obviously means real fans will have to import this one, since it's not on the more obvious format choice of PSP or PS2 instead and the PSone u.k scene is like the living dead. Mind you they might be worth it yet and my PSone is chipped anyway.

No sign of 19XX in that shoot em up collection strangely, perhaps PSone can't handle it properly. Thanks Capcom for giving fans what they want, even if we have to import it.

Good one Capcom - re-release the 1998 Capcom Generation series in fancy new boxes (I have the Jap Ghouls one in Vol.2), and don't even bother to shovel them across the PS2, keeping them on PSone!
What happened to a PS2/Xbox/GC package that has 20-odd games with history/vids etc. in the same style as the Midway titles?
Over to you Taito, please don't cock it up!

Like it matters. Producing it on PSOne = cheaper production costs. Which also = cheaper game. Since your PlayStation2 can play PSOne games (a feature about 99% of worldwide PS2 owners seem to have forgotten about), it makes for a very cheap, affordable slice of quality gaming.

A PSOne compilation of three classic games for about £10-15, or a PS2 compilation of 16 or so classic games (if they're on the same sort of classic scale as Sonic Mega Collection +, then Capcom, like SEGA, won't bother to shove too many of their profitable classic games onto one compilation disc) for about £40-45?

Granted, it doesn't sound like the PSOne version has much going for it in comparison, but when not many people can afford, or be bothered to spend £40 on a god-knows-how-many-year-old set of games, then you begin to see the appeal in Capcom's thinking.

These collections have already been released in Europe and Japan as Capcom Generations. Indeed, in Europe Capcom released a boxset of all four collections for Playstation. I should know, I have it.

The Ghouls disc is good, the shooters are crap but there's an excellent game called Hangamaru (or similar) on one disc which is quite fun.

I spent a bit of time a couple of years ago downloading some capcom roms. final fight ,the streetfighter games and so on. but I really wish they'd just release those. I was always unhappy with console conversions of those games, they were always lacking something. So why not just put an emulator together, put the roms on a disk and get it out there or else it turns someone like me into a pirate when I'd be more than happy to pay for the real thing
