PSP Disappears From Amazon UK Site

Was it something we said?

Last week, SPOnG was the first to report that Amazon.co.uk had put a price and release date for the upcoming Sony PSP on site. While doing a bit of late night shopping over the weekend, we discovered that the relevant page had been taken down by Amazon and replaced with a picture of a Corgi explaining that the page we'd requested couldn't be found. Indeed, search for PSP within the 'PC and Videogames' section and all that comes up is Colin McRae Rally 2005 with a March 25 release date touted. Like we suggested last week, Amazon can be a bit, erm, unreliable with its release dates: Codemasters have been no more specific than telling us that Colin for PSP will be with us in the spring.

Trust us to bring you the dates for European launch when they're announced, 'cos we will, and we wish you all a happy Easter, nudge-nudge...

Here's hoping, anyway.

Last time I checked gameplay were taking pre-orders for the PSP.

They had a release date of March 25th, at £179.99. Sound familier?

And if I'm not mistaken (I have been known to be on way too many occasions), weren't they recently bought up by Game, the largest dedicated videogame retailer in the UK? I'm not saying anything, but you if anyone knows, it's probably them...

But didn't Amazon say 18th March? Goddamit, the release schedule's slipping already ;-)

That site you mention - they are taking pre-orders, yes. The price is a a familiar figure, March rings a bell too, but the legend 'email me if release date changes' suggests there's no guarantee they have it right. And the site that used to be EB has no price or release date as yet, just an invitation to 'register interest'. Do we really need them to email us when s**t's ready to to tell? No.

The point of this follow-up piece was maybe to illustrate that SPOnG had prompted Amazon to have a bit of a PSP re-think. It certainly caused a bit of a kerfuffle when we first mentioned that Amazon had it on site - witness the reaction in the forum for starters.

Normally, I ignore the comments like "world exclusive" or "we were the first to post" but in this case, it's just amazingly ridiculous. Spong was by far not the first to post that Amazon UK had the PSP up for preorders.

That article, for instance, is one I wrote five days earlier. And I had seen it on a few other sites which is where I got the information. I have no intention of starting a pro/anti-spong thread. Just saying, stop the pompous attitude when you don't actually have something to back it up.

Hmmm, I was just pointing out that Amazon wasn't the only site that had this sort of info.

From a bit of casual browsing (MCV had an article today suggesting, I repeat suggesting, that a lot of retailers are expecting the DS and PSP around about the Easter Break in Europe, along with the first AAA games of the year on other platforms) it does seem that these dates are likely. I know nothing concrete, but it's something to look forward to.

Also, the price point is interesting. Sure, these sites are hedging their bets and will probably (should that be hopefully?) reduce the price when it's officially announced, but I am so used to paying more in the UK that I wouldnt be at all suprised if I have to fork out 120 notes on a DS and 180 on the PSP. I hope it's more like 80-100 for the DS and 120-150 for the PSP as the rumours state, but I ain't gonna be holding my breath on that one...

You can pre-order it from www.mx2.co.uk for £149.99 with a release date of 25 March, 2005.
They also have 20 or so games available to pre-order.

MX2 are pretty decent. Interestingly SimplyGames have the DS at £149.99. Hmm.

£149 is a much more realistic price, based on previous UK/Jap/UK hardware price comparrisons. And much more likely to stop myself and most people I know from importing from the states.

D'oh!!!

Ignore that last post - I was on about PSP.

Yeah I gotcha. £150 for PSP is Okish, but for DS? No way, it's got to retail at £100 or less for me to consider it. Hopefully Simply Games have got it wrong, and will amend their pricing accordingly.

Surely the official RRP's are gonna come soon?

Absolutely! Whatever the final price of the PSP, there's no way Nintendo will let them run head-to-head on price - the DS wouldn't stand a chance and the big N knows it.

You're right, the RRPs have got to be along soon - and so has the marketing, surely?
