As the debate rages over the commercial viability and consumer appeal offered by Sony PlayStation Portable, case manufacturer Mitac Precision Technology has gone on record with some fairly impressive sales projections.
A report in Chinese-language Economic Daily News states that SCE expects to ship around three million PSP units within the first three months on sale within the Japanese market. The information, published in the EDN following MPT’s financial briefing, quotes figures supplied by Sony to it’s third-party component manufactures.
Perhaps the most impressive figure on offer is the first year total global sales, which was quoted in the report as being ten million units shipped, a staggering amount and a costly prediction, given the PSP is estimated to see a total loss between $75.4 million and $84.8 million in the second half of the current fiscal year, ending next March: according to Yuki Sugi, analyst at the Tokyo office of Lehman Brothers.
