Sony Slams Misleading PSP Online Reports: 'Out of date and selectively drawn.'
In an entirely unprecedented move, Sony Computer Entertainment has slammed a report from a certain games industry publication as being "out of date" and purposefully misleading.

As you will know, chatter sprang up on Monday that spoke of Sony equipping the upcoming PSP with 802.11 wireless networking system, an unorthodox approach as Bluetooth was considered favourite. The initial story spoke of "well-placed sources", confirming that public hotspots would see the PSP download all kind of data on the move, as well as 802.11 providing a link between PlayStation 3 and PSP.

However, it has emerged today that the 'news' stems from a four- month old internal meeting with developers. Sony claimed that as well as the story being out of date, it is entirely wrong. "It is now out-of-date (old news) and does not represent official Sony Computer Entertainment policy," a spokesman told GameSpot.

More sinister than the fact that the story was gathered from various Internet forums is Sony’s indication that the piece was intentionally misleading. "A range of possible future scenarios were discussed. The article has been selectively drawn from comments made."

It would appear that the site in question still hasn't mastered basic journalistic skills, in yet another blunder that a simple call would have avoided. The source is the very same games industry site that reported that Halo Gold Edition, possibly an online update to the original game, was on the cards. The site put this to press on the grounds that one of its contributors had seen Halo Deluxe Edition strategy guide prepared for release last November. Prima, publisher of the guide, reacted angrily to the confusion caused: "It only takes a phone call or email to us to learn that there is no scheduled 'Halo Deluxe' game on the complete release schedule. This is, incidentally, the easiest way to learn when (or if) games are coming out in the forthcoming months."

At this point in time, the various wireless functions to be included in the PSP's portfolio have not been decided. As soon as there is an official announcement, we’ll let you know.

Spong is possibly the last website in the world with any business mocking anyone else for getting "news" off internet rumour sites...

Yeah, but at least SPOnG makes it clear that it rumour. They don't publish it as informed industry opinion.

GamesIndustry.biz, who published this stuff, pretend to be big, authoritative industry insiders, when really they are bunch of fanboys sitting in a room in Brighton, funded by one of their dads.

On other forums I got the impression that loads of ppl think Spong's news is made up (it was these types of posts that led me here in the first place) They do get a bit carried away sometimes (esp. headlines), but they definately do say if its a rumour. I just figured that they were passionate about their job. Its funny that the times when ppl have called Spong names for making things up and its turned out to be true, those ppl suddenly go very quiet.

Lol. gamesindustry.swiz might be more correct :)

I've been signed up to Google news alerts for a while and, apart from getting alerts about job positions, all I get from gamesindustry.swiz is old news and press releases.

Between Spong, MCV Gamespot and IGN I don't bother reading anywhere else.

Yeah, me too dude. I came here to piss my pants at how shoddy the site was, based on all the kicking they got for saying Microsoft was ging to buy Rare. When I got here, I kinda liked it... now I come most days.

But I did notice how the Micrsoft Rare thing proved to be true, and yet all the people who had been accusing SPOnG of bullshittin never acknowledged the fact. The thing is, I think, SPOnG doesn't tie itself to any one platform... They seem to compliment and criticise each company about equally (although I do detect a bit of an anti-microsoft feeling, but I sympathise with that - and it seems to be against the company and not the Xbox - which r0x). And people seem to get all bent outta shape when they're favourite platform gets a kicking. It's just fanboy fanaticism.

The biz about the PSP wireless link is odd coz i heard it had been removed. Later when it was clear the NDS had a similar link, the PSP wireless link appeared again from nowhere. Just a thought.

Theres nothing wrong with not liking large companies, or a bit of a fanboy? I might sometimes sound off to make a point, that doesn't mean I won't purchase all consoles, or only play games and do nothing else. It's one of a few things I do and enjoy in life. I feel I have to give criticism good or bad about this industry. All I have is my opinion and no real power to move mountains, (unless my opinion can do that) so I intend to use it. We all have a love/hate relationship with everything and everyone. Thats how I feel about all of em. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and even my favourite footy team. Credit and criticism are just yin and yang, you can learn from both.

I could sit here and go on forever about mistakes I've seen made but that would be bloody boring.
