EIGF04 - that's how all the hepcats are referring to it - is set to run from August 8 thru 22, and its sophomore year is officially backed by PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo and nVidia. With the biggest names in gaming on board, EIGF04 is sure to be as big a success - if not bigger - than 2003's inaugural event. Here's Greg Ingham, chairman of EIGF04: "We are delighted to have such key industry players on board. Their support will prove invaluable in driving the festival forward into the public consciousness; encouraging consumer attendance and positioning the interactive digital medium as a mainstream form of entertainment that makes a valid and considerable contribution to British culture. EIGF, in its second year in 2004, will provide an enjoyable and invaluable experience for all."

EIGF04 ties in with the world famous Edinburgh Festival during August, and offers definitive proof that there is a place for videogames alongside music, TV and other entertainment media. EIGF's mandate in 2003 was to provide something for everyone: this year's event is bound to offer the same, and then some, for gaming enthusiasts, developers and publishers alike.

Individual events within EIGF04 so far confirmed include:

Two days of conference sessions 12/13 August.

Game Screenings, offering presentations to the public, trade and press by some of the industry's leading games creators 11-14 August.

Go Play Games, a fortnight-long public gameplay exhibition providing gamers with the opportunity to get interactive with the latest and greatest software and hardware products. Go Play Games runs for the whole of the festival.

I'm sure it will be a cool event. Whether you'll get much of a go on some games is the only problem. Enter somebody hogging the game you want to play so badly.

Who cares about play games when you can listen to Pete Molyneux delivering a key note speech about how great Fable is going to be. Again. Probably.

It' a fair point. But the public can't attend the trade event. Only programmers, and their evil corporate overlords are afforded that honour.

But in fairness, Peter is always a great speaker. And he is exactly the kind of uncorporate undrone we need. He is creative and has vision. Whether Fable will be a good game or not remains to be seen..
