According to financial reports issued today, Sony Computer Entertainment may well use bleeding edge organic light emitting diode technology in place of a traditional backlit LCD screen for its Portable PlayStation.
Sony today revealed that it plans to begin manufacture this spring of a screen measuring four inches, leading to widespread speculation that OLED may well figure in the firm’s portable gaming plans.
OLED screens have a lower manufacture fail-rate than LCD, but are still proving incredibly difficult to produce en masse. They do, however, negate the need for a back-light. OLED screens also refresh around 30% faster than LCD, making them ideal for videogame support.
As to whether the box-fresh screen technology can be manufactured in keeping with SCE’s projected price point for the PSP remains to be seen, with this announcement perhaps pointing towards a high-end PDA.
Whatever happens, we’ll let you know.
