Speaking to Reuters directly after his keynote address to this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft overlord Bill Gates was unsurprisingly secretive about the firm’s plans for the next generation of Xbox hardware.
Neatly side-stepping a question about planned functionality for the machine, Gates said, “We are pushing the boundaries in terms of expanding what people think of as what the device can do", hinting at a an explosion of possibilities for the planned device.
On the back of today’s revelation that the current Xbox will be PC compatible and make use of Windows Media Player software, Gates revealed that more mainstream, non-gaming applications are planned. “You'll see us keep pushing the boundaries there", promised Gates, who seems to have a lot of boundary-pushing planned in the coming year.
Speaking of the roll-out strategy for Xbox ‘Next/II’, Gates said, “In terms of the next round, hey, it's a new game. We're not showing our hand and I don't think Sony's showing their hand. We're doing some very cool work, but that's really all we say at this point. Our goal in this generation was to be one of the leaders, and we feel like we've accomplished that very well.”
