It surfaced this morning that Microsoft's Xbox One will double up as a development kit. What of the PS4? Well, development sources are saying that the PlayStation 4 dev kit costs about $2,500 - a staggering amount more than the Xbox One will be.
That doesn't mean to say that Microsoft is letting developers off lightly though. The dev kit cost maybe that of a retail unit - for Indie game development! - but the company will still be charging a fee to indie developers, which, according to a source will be a few hundred dollars. Microsoft refused to speak publicly about the fee.
As you can probably guess, developers won't be particularly happy with the $2,500 fee for a PS4 dev kit. Don't fret though - dev kits aren't on sale yet. Sony has been sending any that it has available to favoured developers - in effect lending them the dev kits free of charge.
One developer said that "All the indies I know got them for free. Sony has been amazing about kits and development thus far." Another one said that "They are handing them out like candy".
Anyone would think that Sony and Microsoft were in competition with Sony being so nice...
