Don't look now, but Microsoft is starting to spin the wheels of hype early this year - with Xbox community star Major Nelson hinting at a new announcement some 158 days from now. Why, that's around the same time as E3 2013. What could this possibly mean?

Of course, Microsoft is expected to formally announce the next Xbox console some time this year. And E3 would certainly be an appropriate platform to reveal such a product, wouldn't it? Major Nelson has simply placed a countdown clock on his blog, along with the words "And it's on..." Can't really get much more ominous than that.

According to MCV, the company was planning to reveal its next Xbox at E3 2012 but apparently held off on strong sales of the current-gen Xbox 360. Regardless of whether Microsoft actually planned to announce a console or not, the fact is that the traditional games industry took a bit of a battering last year - likely compounded by a distinct lack of next-gen information.

Maybe 2013 is the year that Microsoft stops taking 10-year life cycles literally. Of course, with all this new hype (and in January, no less) the pressure is on Sony to match anything that Microsoft might want to showcase in Los Angeles. Game on.
