After an exhaustive delay and much negotiation, BBC's iPlayer was finally launched on the Xbox 360 this morning. This makes the Beeb's online streaming video service available on every major gaming platform in the UK.The service has long been available to download on Nintendo's Wii and Sony's PlayStation 3, offering free access to the last seven days of BBC content. Microsoft's and the BBC have been at loggerheads for years to bring the iPlayer to Xbox 360, with the big stumbling block being
Microsoft's insistence to offer access via paid Xbox Live Gold accounts.
It seems that the two companies have hammered something out, because the BBC iPlayer on Xbox 360 is absolutely free. As you would expect with the new-age apps being peddled on the Xbox 360, this version of the iPlayer comes with Kinect functionality for hand gestures and voice recognition.
Go download it now, why don't you? In the time it's taken to get to the Xbox 360, you've probably missed that last episode of
Sherlock by now, but you know. Could still catch up on
Never Mind the Buzzcocks or something.
