US Video Game Chart: 3DS Beats PS3 in Price Cut Wars
It was a battle of the price cuts in the US Hardware chart this past month, as number-cruncher NPD Data has revealed that 3DS sales in August shot up to 235,000 units, outweighing Sony's PS3 by nearly 20,000 units.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 couldn't be shifted from the top spot however, as it stands proud with a dominant 308,000 units sold throughout the month. That may not be likely to change with next month's data as anticipation is at fever pitch for Gears of War 3 over there.

In software, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is predictably sitting pretty at the top of the chart with 244,000 units sold in the past month. NCAA Football 12 hops into second place with 240,400 sales, and after nearly a year on sale Call of Duty: Black Ops is still selling well in third.

If nothing else, the NPD data has proven to be something of an embarrassment for analysts across the board. Staring into tea leaves didn't seem to be of much help to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter or analyst firm EEDAR, who both tried to get the jump on the official numbers and led CVG astray with some rather bizarre sales numbers.

Wedbush predicted 275,000 sales for the Xbox 360, while EEDAR proposed 250,000 - a huge margin of error from the official sales figure. Similarly, calls of 135,000 (Wedbush) and 175,000 (EEDAR) for the Nintendo 3DS ended up being way off the mark.
