Carmack: Game Consoles to be Out-Powered by Cell Phones
Pressure on for next-next gen game consoles
Gaming legend John Carmack thinks that before too long mobile phones will outpace current gen consoles in the terms of power.
Says Carmack, "it’s unquestionable that within a very short time, we’re going to have portable cell phones that are more powerful than the current-gen consoles."
He also points out that even his 'older developers', don’t spend a lot of time sitting down in front of (their) 360 or PS3". Instead they pull out their iPad and play some little game all the time.'"
This he says, is "a different experience (to console or PC gaming) though... it’s a diversion rather than a destination. And while they’re certainly powerful enough now to make destination titles, that’s still not really what’s doing particularly well there. But it certainly is a worry.
But all is not lost for non-mobile gaming, "We’re selling more big titles than ever before, despite having all of these other platforms out there. So it looks like it’s parallel growth rather than one stealing from the other. But platform wise, you could certainly imagine a future where, instead of having your console, you have your mobile device and it talks to your TV and when you want the experience on your big screen with the surround sound coming out of there, it’s still on the same device."

Yeah, I play Tiny Wings, or whatever when I'm on a break at work, but I still go home and Play Infamous or Assasin's Creed on an evening.
Unless Carmack is going round his devs' houses on evenings and weekends, he can't say what they're doing overall, can he?
Plus, if you spend all day developing a game, or play testing a game, I bet the lst thing you do is go home and play more.

Well duh - PSVita is pretty good indication we're heading that way, fast. But then, where does Carmack think we're going to find enough lithium to make mega batteries they'd need.
