Capcom has confirmed the impending release of the long-rumoured Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. The game will be out this coming winter.
Working with Capcom on the game is Vancouver developer Slant 6. You might know them from the SOCOM titles Confrontation, Tactical Strike and Fireteam Bravo 3.
In its announcement Capcom emphasised the role co-op plays in the game. As an Umbrella Security Services agent, players will battle either alone or in a team of four not just against hordes of zombies and bio-organic weapons, but also against a US Special Forces squad sent in to uncover evidence of the T-virus outbreak.
The game takes players back to 1998 and (clue's in the title) Raccoon City. It will revisit moments from RE2 and RE3, as well as characters and locations from those games. You might recognise one of the names on your hitlist, actually - rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy. According to the announcement, this is your chance to "rewrite the history of the Raccoon City outbreak".
As well as the emphasised co-op elements, there will be competitive online modes up for grabs.
