Nintendo Running Scared of Risk and Price

Apparently commerce is risky

Nintendo Running Scared of Risk and Price
Everybody likes Nintendo of America top-guy, Reggie Fils-Aime. But somebody might have to explain to him how the free market works.

Two things Reggie (1) Business is risk (2) unless you want god-darned Communism, the consumer is king.

We mention these two handy tips because Reggie has explained to the GameTrailers advertising site that one of the biggest threats to the games industry is that consumers are a bit thick and they might want to pay the same for a AAA console game as they do for an iPhone/iPad/iPod game.

Thus spake Reg' (as transcribed by bitgamer)

"I actually think that one of the biggest risks today in our industry are these inexpensive games that are candidly disposable from a consumer standpoint.

"Angry Birds is a great piece of experience (Trans: 'Game') but that is one compared to thousands of other pieces of content (Trans: 'Games') that for one or two dollars I think actually create a mentality for the consumer that a piece of gaming content should only be two dollars.

"I actually think some of those games are overpriced at one or two dollars but that's a whole different story."

How is that then?

I sort of agree with Reg, although he seems to be dismissing cheap games as not possibly being AAA. Surely a AAA rating is about overall quality of the product, not about how much was spent on development or how much it retails for.

The issue isn't that consumers think high dev cost games should also cost $2. A high dev cost game could sell for $2 if they were certain that they could get enough sales to make a healthy profit.

Maybe the dev industry has got it wrong. The high dev cost games should be getting made for the platforms which can sell them in high volume and easily recoup the dev costs. The "casual" lower dev cost games should be getting made for the consoles which have a lower user base and get lower sales figures. That way all games can sell for the $2 sort of price point...

Funny Irritant, I think many devs consider AAA on how much is spent on development, and there is the problem.
