Mass Effect 2 Wins Big at Golden Joysticks
Bioware's Mass Effect 2 cleans up at this year's Golden Joystick Awards 2010, after snatching the event's top gong, Ultimate Game of the Year.

Commander Shepard was under a lot of heavy competition for the main prize, fighting off titles such as Uncharted 2, Red Dead Redemption, God of War III and Assassin's Creed II for victory. To round off the Canadian studio's good fortune, Mass Effect 2 also took the award for RPG of the Year.

This year's Golden Joystick Awards, hosted at the Park Plaza Hotel in Westminster, allowed gamers to vote on their favourite video games - as a result a lot of winners were expected. FIFA 10 came away with the Sports Game of the Year, while Super Street Fighter IV won Fighting Game of the Year.

There were some surprises, however. Final Fantasy XIII bested Brutal Legend for the title of Soundtrack of the Year, while Riot Games' League of Legends earned Online Game of the Year.

"We're really happy with the result, and it's quite difficult to realise that we've won it at the moment," said Riot's European Marketing Manager Jennifer Siclari. "The team have put a lot of hard work and energy into this game, and it's heartwarming to see the gamers support the title in this way." Even better for the studio was that League of Legends' one-year anniversary has just passed.

"Although we were hoping to win, we weren't sure if it was a done deal until it was announced," Riot's Lead Community Manager, Kevin Forcet, said. He revealed that as a thank-you to the gamers that voted for them, League of Legends players will receive a free in-game item.
