Will be running Google's Android operating system... as the rumour goes

Sony PSP Go Phone Teams with Google Gaming
Sony Ericsson is apparently seeking to use the PlayStation brand to boost interest in gaming on the Google Android platform, by combining elements of the PSP Go with its next upcoming smartphone.

According to a report from Engadget, which cites "a trusted source" on the matter, the mobile phone company is "actively and heavily developing a brand new gaming platform, ecosystem, and device (possibly alongside Google) which are already in the late stages of planning."

The phone itself is said to contain a slider, revealing PSP-like controls. The traditional PlayStation face buttons will be present, alongside shoulder buttons and a D-pad, but the analogue nub will be replaced with a "long touch pad" for 3D control. Running Android 3.0 ('Gingerbread'), games will be offered via the Android store, and initially only available to the Sony Ericsson phone.

Engadget is reporting that PS1 titles and PSP games will be available "on-tap" and that the device, which will have a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, will contain Xperia and PlayStation branding. It will be available as early as October.

This sounds like an interesting way to expand the PSP brand, but questions will be raised as to the use of Google's software as an operating system over Sony's own award-winning Xross Media Bar. And with piracy of Android apps becoming increasingly popular, would Sony want to curse itself with a second helping of PSP exploits?

If this comes to fruition, those will probably be our first questions to ask. What do you think, readers?

Use of Android as an OS hasn't stopped other handset manufacturers from implementing their own interface, so I see no reason why the XMB couldn't remain.
Whether it should remain is open to debate. I don't think it's best suited to a mobile device, especially when compared to UI advances made by Apple and now the Windows Phone 7 Series (or WP7S as I snappily call it)

Sony Ericsson - never again!

Both Sony and Sony Ericsson have turned into false-advertising, corner-cutting, money grubing companies, whose every new product is inferiour to the previous version. There is no such game that will make me want to buy any of their crap ever again

Nah, I disagree. Sony, at least, keep their technology up to date. And I haven't had a Sony product break. As for "money-grabbing", firstly, I agree that they are expensive, but Sony always has been, it's not a recent "problem". Secondly, all companies strive to make money. If it's too expensive, don't buy it, you don't have to complain. There are always cheap alternatives ;)

I find that Sony's technology is exciting, even if it's not that inherently innovative, due to the way they push technology. I don't mind paying for that. PS3, for example, has as standard: Wifi, HDD, Wireless controllers, Bluray, free PSN. And the DS - that was rushed out because of the threat the PSP was. The PSP is the most underrated (currently available) console, in my opinion.

Ultimately, I think a PSP phone is overdue, to be honest. It should have been the PSP Go in the first place. If it has XMB is sacrificed for Android, I'd consider that a bonus. However, powering phones with 1GHz processors is a bit out-of-date. If it's not future-proof, that would be a shame.
