Sony Ericsson is apparently seeking to use the PlayStation brand to boost interest in gaming on the Google Android platform, by combining elements of the PSP Go with its next upcoming smartphone.According to a report from
Engadget, which cites "a trusted source" on the matter, the mobile phone company is "actively and heavily developing a brand new gaming platform, ecosystem, and device (possibly alongside Google) which are already in the late stages of planning."
The phone itself is said to contain a slider, revealing PSP-like controls. The traditional PlayStation face buttons will be present, alongside shoulder buttons and a D-pad, but the analogue nub will be replaced with a "long touch pad" for 3D control. Running Android 3.0 ('Gingerbread'), games will be offered via the Android store, and initially only available to the Sony Ericsson phone.
Engadget is reporting that PS1 titles and PSP games will be available "on-tap" and that the device, which will have a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, will contain Xperia and PlayStation branding. It will be available as early as October.
This sounds like an interesting way to expand the PSP brand, but questions will be raised as to the use of Google's software as an operating system over Sony's own award-winning Xross Media Bar. And with
piracy of Android apps becoming increasingly popular, would Sony want to curse itself with a second helping of PSP exploits?
If this comes to fruition, those will probably be our first questions to ask. What do you think, readers?
