BioWare co-founder Dr. Greg Zeschuk has opined that the future of gaming "isn't necessarily on console." The statement came during a keynote address at this week's Develop conference in Brighton, where the RPG studio announced plans to launch a "small-scale MMO.""[Consoles are] the past. It's going to be a strong thing going forward, but the future is in all of these new businesses that are starting up," Zeschuk added, citing the rising popularity of devices such as iPhones, iPads and Nintendo's upcoming 3DS.
The good doctor addressed the question, "On a big basis, what is working in business?" with an assessment of the industry's apparent decline. "Every year it's a little bit down. You can't blame the economy any more. Really, it's about online. We're obviously working on
Star Wars: The Old Republic, a big MMO. But we're working on smaller MMO type game games across the group - things all over the space."
Diehard BioWare fanatics shouldn't hit the panic button yet though. Zeschuk confirmed that while the studio is going to be "exploring pretty aggressively," it will still "continue to do triple-A console [games]."
