HMV Slashes PSP Go Pricing

Sony helps out with some tweets

Let's be charitable and say that the PSP Go has not been the most popular of all pieces of gaming hardware with retailers. Well, now HMV has slashed £100 from the handheld, and SCEE is tweeting the news.

The HMV deal, which you can see here, prices the go at £148.99. It's a deal that Sony's own European PlayStation blog tweeted to PlayStation owners as follows:

"HMV is offering the PSPgo for under £150! Get in there quick, there's no telling how long it will last."

HMV's price-cut today follows week-one price cutting of the unit back in October Game, HMV, Play and Amazon all dropped the price of the PSP Go from £249.99 to £199.

I still wonder what the upside to the Go is for retailers. Once they flog it they will never sell a game for it and if it takes off (which it wont) it could be a trend for others to do the same.

Horrible idea that will never work.

Sony have come up trumps with some kit like the Walkman and Playstation but for such a big brand they have had some massive fudge ups...minidisk, UMD, not beating apple to MP3 and while Blueray beat HDDVD it is still yet to win consumers!

The problem with the PSP Go is that all games have to be downloaded, which is currently much more effort than simply buying a game in the shop.

They should have matured the service more on the original PSP before releasing a PSP with no UMD drive. Plus the launch of the PSP Go has caused the price of the original PSP to drop more.

If people are going to get a PSP, they don't care whether it's a PSP Go or not - they all play PSP games.

In addition, personally I don't like the concept of paying full price for a downloadable game - physical copies are much more versatile, i.e. you can share them with your friends, and when you complete them you can sell them, or smash them up.

Rental is the way forward for downloadable games.

@PaulRayment Sony just need to give retailers game-specific DLC pre-pay cards (that can be downloaded via Media Go if the user has no wireless or something) and give those cards collectible value so that consumers still feel good about owning a 'physical-but-not' product. Either that or offer a read-only Mem Stick to install the game from.

Sony can still save this one, but they just need to give the retailers a little something-something. Anything, really. A slab of plastic with some POG-like glitter on it or something, in the shape of a Sackboy that you can hang somewhere maybe. Or whatever.

@PaulRayment

Well that's because Minidisc and UMD don't offer anything new over what already exists. There is absolutely no benefit in them. Because the UMD is not actually Universal (because including a UMD drive in a product is a hassle when it's of no benefit), its design has never been iterated on and improved.

UMDs have only really ever been a good idea for the PSP (nothing else). Because other media player producers don't also control their content, it just makes more sense to have a hard disk, if flash memory is too small/expensive. I think it just shows that you can't have a successful media player if you are too precious with your content.

Yes, I tried to buy one of on of these earlier this afternoon @ £148.99, but it would not let me add it to the basket. Tried twice and gave up, so called the customer service number and was told they had sold out. This was at 3pm this afternoon.
At about 4.30pm this afternoon went back on their website and found the PSP Go back on the site but at £199.99, then called them again and was told this was a campaign they were running (So this amazing campaign must have lasted an hour!!)
All in all they would not sell one to me at the cheaper price and would not admit they had messed up and just lied about a campaign.
They will not honor their own mistakes
