BioWare’s co-founder Greg Zeschuk has recently spoken about Dragon Age: Origins with Joystiq, and revealed the studio’s intentions to continue developing for the PlayStation 3 platform - while somewhat skirting the now urban-mythical Mass Effect 2 PS3 rumour at the same time.Dragon Age: Origins is a continuation of the PC RPG series, but the game marks the first time BioWare have released a product on the PS3. Zeschuk states that development for the system will continue. “We have quite a few people working in-house [as well as externally for the platform]. So yeah... We’re definitely going to be doing PS3.”
Then, all of a sudden, “You know, I can’t say anything about
Mass Effect in that regard but you know, I can definitely say
Dragon Age and other things we do will definitely be on PS3.”
Say what? Joystiq seemed just as confused at the seemingly impromptu bringing up of the game, and asked whether
Mass Effect’s no-show is to do with starting later in a story-driven series. “We’re not saying anything about
Mass Effect for PS3.” Zeschuk said. “I don’t know anything about that! That’s crazy talk. I don’t know anything about that.”
That couldn’t have been more awkward if Zeschuk said that phrase while winking knowingly. Speaking of soundbites, the Creative Officer of EA’s RPG/MMO Group also spoke to Joystiq on a range of other topics, including
Dragon Age DLC and how fans sometimes take developers to task over quotes made several years ago.
“You always have to be considering the expectation level of your fans. It’s funny because we live in this industry where people will pull out some quote we made two years ago and go ‘Look! This is what you said.’ And we’re like ‘Yeah, I said that two years ago’. I mean, I say stuff all the time, and half of it may not be true, you never know.”
While PS3 development - with or without
Mass Effect - is assured, BioWare seems less sure about Wii projects, as the Zeschuk admits that the studio is at a loss as to what to do with it. “We just haven’t figured out what we would want to do on Wii yet and how it would git into all of our franchises and all of our other stuff.” But don’t fret, as it’s noted that BioWare is keen on taking advantage of the platform as soon as it ‘understands the key audience.’
