Sony: PSP Weakness is Games
In what could go down as one of this year's most startlingly non-Corporate BS driven statements, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's president, David Reeves has owned up to the place of the PSP in the development pecking order.

"Its weakness, however, is its software. And that’s because developers, when it comes to placing their bets, have to choose PS3 and 360, then Wii, then DS, maybe even PS2 before PSP. It’s the same at our internal studios, where the focus has been on PS3. They’ve also focused a lot on PS2 as well because we have to get the SingStars out for that format. So PSP games will come – they just take a while longer."

Yes, from the horse's mouth, third-party development goes:

PS3/Xbox 360
Wii
DS
PS2
PSP

And even the internal development studios are concentrating on PS2 over PSP. In the same interview, Reeves also rules out a PSP2 saying that the company is concentrating on PSP-3000.

That's a great shame. PSP has been badly managed and Sony have been sorely lacking in ideas to save it and encourage development.

There are ways to make it more attractive to develop for, but Sony fail to do them.

A good idea that Sony should be looking into, is getting the trophy system onto PSP too. Then when some connect up to PSN, their PSP trophies can be transfered onto PS3, and saved for others to see.

The other thing that Sony fail to do, is build on those PSP games that we don't see officially, stuff like DJ Max Portable or Taiko No Tatsujin.

I also believe that the same way Sony have opened up PS2 to wider development, they need to do the same for PSP. PSP is still pretty powerful but not everyone has a license to develop for it. And while Sony have shiny daggers for the homebrew community, there's some talented people under the radar out there (LBP is enough evidence of this).

How do they do this? By producing a new Yaroze/XNA like service for PSP (or accomodating PSP into the current one). I'm sure it would transform the PSP's fortunes for the better, just like it has produced gems for PS3. Such a system could also work in their favour, because PSP and PS2 are close in terms of tech, and PS2 is still popular in japan.

Throw the gates open, Sony and more games will come.
