Earlier this month a chap called Ashley Highfield left a company called Kangaroo and joined Microsoft as managing director and vice-president of consumer and online UK. Kangaroo is a BBC/ITV/Channel 4 broadband TV (think iPlayer) joint venture.
Prior to this Highfield was either responsible for delaying the massively successful iPlayer or coming up with the idea in the first place,
depending on your
stance.
What's that got to do with the Xbox 360? Maybe something, maybe not much. So, let's look at Microsoft's latest Xmas-aimed marketing venture for the console...
MCV has been speaking with Microsoft's UK head of gaming and entertainment, Stephen McGill. They spoke about a "partnership with MySpace and Channel 4 to host a special prime-time music show airing on TV at Christmas" this will be called 'Xbox Presents Campfire Sessions '.
There will also be a competition to to "select number of Xbox owners the chance to attend the filming, with the final show getting a Channel 4 airing on December 28th at 10pm".
Apparently, "TV has become really significant for us. People are staying in more rather than going out given the current climate..." And we thought that most reports were stating that TV ad revenues were declining as more and more people played video games. Silly us.
As for the Highfield thing, of course the appointment of a high-profile name earlier in the month with lots... and lots... and lots of experience in TV is simply one of those coincidences in the creation of a TV special. Of course it is, so stop your gossiping.
