Just as you are portioning out your pocket money to afford a Game Boy Advance (released June 22nd) some games and a link cable, it has emerged that the console will soon feature wireless multiplayer support in the form of an infrared adapter.
Although nothing has been confirmed at this point, the latest version of the legal paperwork handed out to Game Boy Advance developers states quite clearly that any developer must sign off their consent for the development of infrared technologies for the console.
Nintendo it seems, never shy of making screamingly obvious moves towards profiteering, would rather us fork out on link cables before announcing the new device, whatever it may be. Our bet is that Nintendo will soon release an infrared add-on thingy to enable link play.
The cost of such devices has plummeted of late and Nintendo has been quick to take full advantage. The Game Boy Color comes infrared equipped and the latest edition of the Pikachu pedometer has infrared capabilities.
It is unclear whether the current GBA games will have multiplayer capabilities but it’s likely that any new add-on will use the link port in the console. This will mean that it is capable of converting the data that would normally flow through the link cable into an infrared signal in the same way the PlayStation 2 DVD remote works.
Nintendo were not willing to comment at this stage.
