RetroN 5 Coming June, Supports Games From Nine Consoles
Collecting classic games is fun. Classic consoles collecting dust is not so fun. US hardware developer Hyperkin has the answer in the RetroN 5, a device which contains hardware allowing users to play games from nine consoles from yesteryear.

The hardware was revealed for the first time at the Midwest Gaming Classic event last night. It was something of a surprise announcement, given that its last product was the RetroN 3 in 2010 - classic game enthusiasts were expecting a reveal of the RetroN 4.

Hyperkin said that the reason for the number jump is because it had figured out a way to add a fifth cartridge slot to its model line without impacting production. Because of this, the RetroN 5 is capable of playing original cartridges for NES, Famicom, SNES, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance.

The console features six physical controller ports, three on each side, to accommodate joypads from each platform it emulates. Original controllers can also be cross-platform - a SNES pad can be used to control a Mega Drive game, for example. Four Bluetooth controllers can also be sync'd up for multiplayer without a multitap. The RetroN 5 also comes with HDMI 720p upscaling and support for save games.

It will be made available in June, with a price of $100.
