Capcom reaffirms its independence

Will Capcom team up with Square, Namco and Enix?

Since Square, Enix and Namco announced that they were entering into a mini-merger of sorts and failing to supply any reason other than expensive development costs, the Japanese games industry has been abuzz with rumours of other companies doing the same thing.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Capcom president Heiji Oshima has stated that Capcom is not considering entering into any agreement of this kind. "[We] have no thoughts on affiliating our capital with other companies, and we have no plans in the future as well."

When quizzed over whether Capcom was considering entering into the alliance, Oshima said, "[We] have no thoughts on joining" and "[We] don't know what exactly the benefits are for the three companies to form an alliance."

Capcom’s president also spoke on the company’s multi-platform strategy. "[We are] currently negotiating with each of the hardware makers. Hopefully actualize this with some of our software during this fiscal."

It is likely that Capcom, like most of the other big games developers, is caught in a tug of war for the exclusivity of its future titles. It is likely that this will become one of the strongest weapons in the three-way console war about to be unleashed upon us by Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.
