PlayStation 3 In-Game Communication This Summer

SCEE's managing director lets it slip.

Posted by Staff
Having teased PlayStation 3 owners with In-Game XMB themed T-shirts at the recent Game Developers Conference (GDC), it appears that Sony is close to confirming in-game communications functionality for the platform this summer.

That is if the words of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe managing director Ray Maguire are to be believed. Speaking to SCEE's trade partners recently, Maguire said:

"Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, firmware update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third party partners and our own studios."

Although it feels like summer might be a long way off, what with the high winds and snow battering SPOnG's underwater castle today, it's really only three months to wait for the kind of in-game comms that you can probably get by pressing the green triangle while playing Resistance: Fall of Man and Warhawk.

Bear in mind that the quote says, "...in-game communication" and not 'in-game cross media bar (XMB)'.

We contacted SCEE for a full and frank admission of time and date, and we were told, "I'm afraid we're not currently making any further comment on this".

Bugger.

You need to back up your bile if you are going to continually spout it, sunshine. So what's s**t about it? Methinks you are just bitter, as the tide is turning against you and your beloved XBox. Please, list away your XBox's "amazing line-up" and as you are so informed, list for us too your version of PS3's line-up, so we can compare them side-by-side and maybe understand where you are coming from. And perhaps fill in the blanks for you if we can find them.

Otherwise, please, please, PLEASE can we have a banning for this chump? She contributes nothing other than constant drivel and s**te.

Get bent, oh wait too late.

There are more Xbox 360 KNOWN titles than PS3 titles in terms of exclusives, Xbox 360 has a much bigger line up of games this year than Sony and Xbox 360 has MORE games than PS3 will ever have since 360 already has over 300 games compared to the shoddy crappy ports on the PS3 and the exclusives Sony has lost.

Sony only has MGS4, GT5 and FF13 as its top exclusives and known games.

Microsoft has far more exclusives and better genres, there are hardly any RPG games on the PS3 I mean come on where are the RPG's?? 360 has Fable 2, Too Human, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Dark Messiah Might and Magic all exclusive to the 360 console none on the PS3.

Then you got the PGR franchise on the 360 and Forza which is a far better sim than GT could ever be.

The PS3 is just a blu-ray player, please get over it.

where the hell did you get "biggest" from anyway? having a lot of games is one thing, having games that suck monkey balls is quite another

It dosn't really cheer me up thinking about how many great games there are for it while my 360 is broken, sitting on a shelf waiting to be sent back to microsoft. In case you are interested the ps3 is still working just fine.
I agree there are a lack of decent titles for it but I got in early, with the original US SKU and there are still a couple of ps2 titles I haven't played yet so it dosn't seem like such a hardship, see?

While your PS3 is working yes Sony got 1 thing right their advantage on technology is amazing especially with the PS3 but all new 360's with the Falcon edition is not going to give you red rings.

All in all the 360 is still the better experience the PS3 is just a media device suited for playing movies.

Can you be certain that the 360's with falcons won't give RRoD's? no you can't, and I think you meant to say the 360 is the better experience FOR YOU

You forget that the PS2 was exactly the same - next to bugger all games on it worth getting within the first year and a half. The Dreamcast had been out a year already and it had a much better lineup of games, while the only thing PS2 had going for it was a DVD player.

Then Metal Gear Solid 2 appeared.

And suddenly, developers altogether jumped on the console, or had released games they had been working on for those 12 months.

I'm in no way saying that the XBOX 360 will fall quite the same way as the Dreamcast... but the point is you can never be so sure of a console's future, because one little incident can change its fortunes around.

Ah who am I kidding, you won't listen to reason anyway. I'll happily enjoy my 360, PS2 and Dreamcast library while waiting for the perfect PS3 bundle to come out.

Hilarious, aren't you? For the record, I am not a homosexual, but I have nothing against them. I don't know what SuperSaiyan's problem is with people who are "bent" though, as she so charmingly puts it.

What a retard.

PS Your game list is not impressive. And you forgot about Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, SOCOM, The Agency and Wipeout among many more that you really can't be bothered to register in your tiny one-sided mind. And also the fact that by the end of the year, multi-format games will most likely sell more for PS3 than 360. Now piss off, homophobe.

A slightly skewed view of the Dreamcast situation, there: whilst MGS might have been the final nail in the coffin for Dreamcast, it had been struggling from the start, so comparing PS2 vs Dreamcast against PS3 vs Xbox360 is disingenuous.

For starters, SEGA were already struggling financially when they launched the Dreamcast, it was very much make or break for them, eventually proving break. From the start, Sony were running a major spoiler campaign to denigrate the system, doing their utmost to persuade PS1 owners to wait for the launch of the PS2 rather than switching to the, arguably, more powerful Dreamcast. Dreamcast sales were sluggish for most of its short life, then gasping for breath once the PS2 hit the market.

The Xbox 360, however, has got so much money behind it it's quite ridiculous, especially with how much has actually been lost on sales of the system. Sony's attempts to "delay" the next-gen spectacularly blew up in their smug faces, time and time again. By the time the PS3 launched, Xbox360 had a significant lead time and managed to get a suitably large number of systems into the market; whilst people will point at the reduced sales of the Xbox360 since then, what else did you seriously expect once there were 3 systems to choose from?

*Not brought to you by an Xbox360 fanboy*

Firstly, what makes you feel you are qualifed to comment on which is a better experience when you don't own both of the devices in question?
I do own both and would say the experience of having to keep posting broken consoles off for repair is less than thrilling.
Secondly, are you suggesting early adopters should go out and replace their 360's with new ones, so they function as intended and how would shelling out for a new console help with this wonderful experience you mention?
Thirdly, to say the ps3 is just a media device suited for playing movies is just plain daft, In case you are not aware, it has a powerful and as far as I am aware, unique in consumer computing system architecture. The full potential of which is yet to be explored.
Oh and it can play games.
In fact now I've started.
I also consider the ps3 to be better value for early adopters of both systems for reasons I can only outline briefly right now (phew).
By the time I'd have bought the preimum pack 360 and the wifi adaptor and the HD-DVD drive, the price was If I recall slightly higher than the imported 60gig ps3 which did all that out of the box and had HDMI hardware backwards compatibility and didn't break all the time.
Know what I mean?
