Sony Flaunts In-Game XMB

Oh, very bloody amusing...

The ongoing fun at the Game Developer Conference in San Francisco includes a Sony Blogger Lounge where not only are Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (review here) and flOw for PSP being shown off, but apparently some T-shirts have been left scattered around.

"Big wow!" we hear you slur. Well, it could be because the Ts in question carry the highly amusing message of 'In-Shirt XMB'. A staggeringly clever reference to the In-Game Cross Media Bar promised by Sony for the PlayStation 3.

Is this is a hideously smug slap in the face for those PS3 owners who want to stop their Xbox 360-owning 'friends' from constantly prodding them and calling them names?

Or does this indicate that tomorrow, when various developers gather at the Lounge, an announcement might be due?

Remember that tonight is the night that Microsoft's John Schappert (Corporate Vice President LIVE, Software and Services for the Interactive Entertainment Business... phew!) is to make his keynote address to the conference. So, what better time for Sony to finally stop the ongoing bitching and leaking of the In-Game XMB's arrival?

Are you feeling somehow inferior due to no In-Game XMB on your PS3? Does it make not one jot of difference? Do you want to explain to PS3 owners the joy of your Xbox 360's In-Game communications? Tell us in the Forum.

Well to be honest and fanboism aside I want the PS3 to have similar capabilities to Xbox Live so when you are watching a movie you are signed into PSN, when you are playing a game you have full access to sending and recieving messages including sending and recieving voice messages and pictures.

If Sony can match Xbox Live then its something Microsoft can no longer use as an excuse for its charge if they say Xbox gold members have access to content then I call BS cos we have to 99% of the time pay for that content anyways.

For me Xbox Live is an amazing service and well put together with simplicity in mind is PS3 can get that right then Microsoft has to do something to make it even better or take away the cost.

And lastly the PS3 to me has become less appealling since the loss of many exclusives that I bought the console for in the first place, if it gets games that I want and some really cool amazing features AND they bring back the 60gb model but perhaps better and or slimmer then yeah I might get one again.

Personaly I couldn't give a crap about in-game XMB, when I'm playing a game i want to play the game not chat to my mate's, and when I'm watching a film the last thing i want to see is "so and so is now online" in top right corner of the screen

When you are watching a movie, you can be signed into PSN. It's a pointless feature, as Daz said. And the messaging feature(from the XMB) is already in SingStar which suggests it's what the devs do with it that counts. And what exclusives has PS3 lost? PS3's game line-up is far better than 360 this year, exclusives and non-exclusives.

It's not a massive issue, but it would be nice to be able to contact friends and say "I am playing Call of Duty in this lobby in this game", but it's never been a deal-breaker for me. Still, extra features are extra features and I look forward to firmware update 3.0, whatever it may hold.

Actually the Xbox 360 has the bigger line up of exclusives this year because it has games everyone has heard of unlike the PS3, even with last years exclusives of new titles they all flopped even Heavenly Sword...

360 has Fable 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Too Human, Lost Odyssey and many more.

Also Xbox 360 is the ONLY place you will find the most RPG's and the most varied racing games especially with the PGR franchise there is no game like it on any other platform.

The only decent titles that everyone wants on the PS3 is FF13, MGS4 and GT5 which are exclusives.

GTA4 is cross platform just in case you mention it.

You don't even make sense within the same post.

I was saying the 360's line up of exclusives is bigger over the PS3's because the PS3 does have a few exclusives this year ones that no one has heard of EXCEPT the ones mentioned.

Every 360 exclusive that is out or has come out has sold very well.

Funny enough the Xbox hasnt lost any once Xbox 1 exclusives to Sony i.e. developers taking Xbox 1 exclusives and making them on the PS3 instead.

Instead once PS2 exclusives have ended up on the Xbox 360 system!

Thanks for these 'hilarious' shirts, Sony. I love spending £400 on a console that promises basic functionality, not getting it, and then being slapped in the face.

I'd hardly call in-game XMB "Basic functionality" IMO Basic functionality would be being able to turn it on and play game on it sort of like the the NES, SNES and Megadrive, anything more is extra, it doesn't have to do it.

Fable 2, Ninja Gaiden 2 - people have heard of them because theyre sequels. Meh.
Too Human - looks interesting
Lost Odyssey - never heard of it, so it's probably not interesting to me.

Appart from Met Street Racer on Dreamcast, which is *exactly* like PGR

I agree. I think for £425 they can afford to send me one of those T-shirts for myself, to apologise for lack of in-game XMB and release in-game XMB right now. And on the back it should say "I'm not showing you where my DualShock's gone," or "In-Bin HD-DVD", because now they'll have plenty of extra cash from the would-have-been-bought HD-DVDs as well.

What are you on? Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Tekken 6... there are more. im just not bothered getting out the whole list. im so sick of sayig PS3 has nothing but the big three. it has many great games which are exclusive Uncharted, Warhawk, Rachet and clank, & Folklore just to name a few. if you dont own the console you are going to know more games that are exclusive to your system. just because you dont know about them doesent mean they are not known by PS3 owners.

Sorry, Killzone 2?

Yawn.

You're arguing from a poor position if you have to trot that out as a much anticipated PS3 title...

Resistance should be solid...but whats truly exceptional about it is it should be the first sequel of a PS3 game that didn't suck...until they roll out MotorStorm 2...then it will have a friend.

Tekken...sure, I bet theres lots of ex-PS2 fanboys who currently own a 360 that will be yearning for this one...me not so much.

Which leaves LittleBigPlanet. Yeah, OK. Touche. One.

I'm not saying the pendulum isn't in the process of swinging back that direction, but its a long way from there yet.

Firstly, I will ignore SuperSaiyan's comment because she speaks from the arse, constantly. Not even worth registering.

But you, PreciousRoi, shame on you for your nonsense! Killzone 2 "yawn"? Ha! That's crazy talk. Although the first one was a disappointment, I am confident KZ2 will rock. Obviously it's too early to tell, but then again it's probably too early to say Gears 2 will rock on 360, seeing as the original is one of the most over-rated piles of arse I ever had the misfortune to play. Probably great if you are a kick-ass American rawk-loving goon, or the UK equivalent, but I found it too short, too samey, and too b******s, to pay any heed to Gears 2. So, if you don't mention Gears 2, I won't mention Killzone 2. For now anyway. Ooh, it would be exciting if they came out on the same week. What a battle it would be. I know which one I'd rather play- the one that lasts longer than 5 minutes.

Oh, and Heavenly Sword is actually a damn fine game once you learn to play it properly. Some of the most satisfying headshots I've come across in ages. Battles that are quite epic, and genuinely funny in places. Really, actually genuinely amusing. I swear. King Bohan is a comedy legend. Also some of the best acting and cinematography in gaming, although that doesn't make a game good- but it certainly added to the overall experience. So the sequel to that is anticipated by one person at least: me.

I could mention Gran Turismo 5 as a PS3 biggie but I find those games deathly dull.

This is PS3's year. It's staring you all in the face. Not that it matters. What matters is that whatever console you have, you will have plenty of great games for. There have always been exclusives and this gen is no different. The whole "my console is better than yours" debate is boring and b******s, especially if you have a 360 because my console is blatantly better than yours...
