Sony Designer: "F**k Halo"

David Jaffe and Sony designer Adam Orth get chatty

Sony Designer: "F**k Halo"
Every now and then, when SPOnG's wondering why we get mobbed by PR folk every time we get near a game developer, someone like God of War creator David Jaffe or his mate over at Sony, Adam Orth, comes along to remind us. "Fuck Halo", is what Mr Orth has to say.

That little gem comes from a conversation between the Jaffe and Orth, who worked with Jaffe on Twisted Metal: Black and Calling All Cars. Jaffe, throwing caution to the wind, decided to print said conversation on his blog.

Neither of them, it would seem, buy into the hype surrounding Halo. Jaffe comments, "I just don't get HALO. I don't think the story is all that special, don't think the world or characters matter much. I don't know if I am simply not 'getting it' and it really is all that...or Microsoft has simply purchased rabid fan reactions for what is a great game but nothing more."

Orth, meanwhile, finds the Halo ad campaign with the catchphrase "Believe" a bit, well... we'll let him tell you: "that ad is insulting "belive"? come on". He goes on to explain, "well, for 1, i think it's disrespectcful to actual veterans of real wars and 2, they really expect people to become that invested in the halo story? i guess i just really dislike halo and that ad aint helping".

Don't think, however, that Jaffe isn't sensitive to how the exchange may make Halo fans feel. He just doesn't care that much. "...sadly it will rile up halo fans...hope they see that I DO LIKE HALO!" Jaffe says. "I just don't get the religious fervor and feel much of the fervor has been purchased by Microsoft. But they'll still hate me".

Orth doesn't seem too bothered, either. The conversation ends:

ADAM: actaully, i stand by what i said, you can print my name, just leave out "fuck halo"

JAFFE: shit really? Ok.

ADAM: ok, print it
fuck it

JAFFE: cool, you got it.

For more from Jaffe check out SPOnG's Calling all Cars interview with him. He's probably going to have a PR person sleeping at his house for the next 10 years, so we might not see much of him for a while.

You can read up on Halo 3 over on SPOnG's dedicated game page.

I had the opportunity to play the original xbox Halo for about 4 hours solid one weekend. I had no compulsion whatsoever to continue playing after I put the controller down.

I really couldn't see what all the fuss was about, the game just did not grab me at all.

This isn't a "Halo is rubbish" comment, just an "I really didn't find Halo that spectacular." comment.

errr, its called Gameplay!, Sure the story is OK and the Charactures are OK, but the Gameplay ROCKS!, But i suppose we should come to exppect this kind of nonsensicle ranting from Sony guys, is resistance any different to halo cept for say the gameplay?

It doesnt shopw any class on their part, it just shows jelousy, jelousy that you guys didnt think of it first that you dont have a game this intensly popular!, im mean this is even more popular than Final Fantasy, MGS, Mario or Zelda or anything on any other platform.

I'm sorry, but that comment just screams "Your opinions aren't as valid as mine!" - the guy is entitled to his own opinions, maybe he doesn't like FPS games, maybe he didn't like the story, maybe he didn't find the gameplay so rocking?

This is the sort of fanboy ranting I have come to detest. It's like saying "I have nailed my colours to this mast and if you're not 100% with me, you are 100% against me and I will hate you and criticise any comment you make from now on." It's pathetically immature.

I don't like FPS games in general, however I loved Quake3. I do love Tomb Raider-like action adventure games, Primal, God of War, Hitman, etc. However, I don't get offended when anybody criticises Tomb Raider or Hitman. I also don't criticise anybody else's preferences for FPS games.

Different strokes people, learn to deal.

There's no reason for a Halo fan to object that some people either don't like the game, or don't like the game as much as they do.

There's plenty to object to in the allegation that enthusiasm for the series is bought and paid for by Microsoft.

Halo isn't Windows. Nobody is forced to use it or to like it.

Many Halo fans hail from before Bungie was purchased by Microsoft, and some are Halo fans despite that fact, not because of it.

This guys opinions are not valid. This guy tries to bash on something by saying we should not be emotionally involved in it because it's fiction. You hear that? Every writer/director/actor/painter/sculptor/playwright/etc... EVER has just been masturbating.

I can't care about a story unless it's "based on true events"? F**k him.

This just sounds like very sour grapes, just because his games (I'm not knocking GOW, I like it) just don't get this kind of attention he's lashing out!?... if you don't like Halo, then that's fine but why feel the need to go on record saying it & basically come off sounding like a spoilt brat?.... Maybe he should have a word with Sony & say, "Hey how comes my games don't get this kind of coverage!?"..... jealous is a very ugly thing.

The irony is he's actually brought MORE attention to Halo 3! hahahaha.....mug

Yeah i suggest Tyrion you take your own medicine as its my opinion, how did my opinion differ to his opinion is mine a lesser opinion?, i took nothing personal from his comments i merly stated that he didnt mention gameplay and and that he showed very little class in his aprroach to state he didnt like Halo 3, its fine not to like it but to say "f**k halo" how is that clever or constructive? The fanboy here sounds like you, any time, Sony says something stupid you step in to defend, and my opinion was he said something stupid and said it without any class! will you ever agree that sonys current PR is S**t.

ps

if no one disagreed with someones opinion where would humanity stand today?

I owe you an apology. I read your comment as replying to irritant, sorry I now have re-read it and you were obviously having a go at Adam Orth.

I agree with you that he showed no class with his "F**k Halo" comment.

Sorry again, I flew off the handle because I mis-read your comment. I retract all insinuation that you are a fanboy.

However, my stance against fanboys stands.

haritori wrote:

I've defended Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft and attacked them all too. That's not a fanboy. The reason I look like I defend Sony more than anybody else is because people say more stupid s**t about Sony than anybody else, at least they have been recently.

Hopefully, having engaging and informative debates while respecting other's opinions. It's OK to disagree, it's not OK to dismiss everything someone else thinks based on one disagreement.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." - Evelyn Beatrice Hall writing about Voltair's more arcane "Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too" and "I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write."

Did u play Halo @ the time?, if u did then you would of got it (if u like FPS games) i owned a PS2 for many years b4 i bought the XBOX1 & was hoping as a sony fan that PGR & Halo were gonna be turkeys so i could return it & laugh at MS, but when i booted up Halo, it was like playing the next generation, it looked stunning all the enviroments the open spaces then all the creatures & there advanced AI then the gameplay, u play Halo for the 1st time & it feels like u've been playing it all your life, it was spot on, i couldn't put it down, i was up early to play it b4 i went 2 work!!! i was addicted. the storyline, what was coming next!, the 1st time u fly a banshee around the sky with all the enviroment below u, was awesome. Its easy 2 forget now days but Halo @ the time (for consoles) was the real deal, it blew everything away.
