Capcom takes the same road as Sega
The rumour mill is in overdrive mode at the moment concerning the possibility of Capcom leaving the arcade market. The Japanese news service Nikkei Telecom who announced Sega’s tactical withdrawal from the hardware market even before Sega did, is now tipping the same fate for Capcom. The arcade market is gradually dwindling and this is sad day for all gamers as we lose such an important company.

Capcom has denied this report, as is usual in most comments regarding leaked information. They released this statement:

”Though our company will cut down on the arcade department in the next fiscal and focus on the home console market, we will also continue to provide software for the arcades as well.”

They were also keen to point out that they were downsizing their arcade operations and not eliminating them.

Capcom is the first major company to retreat from the arcade scene and that is bad omen. Arcades have always been used to demonstrate new technology and push forward innovation in games. A high percentage of modern games have arcade roots that can be directly traced back to their parentage. The upside is that Capcom will be concentrating on consoles from now on, excellent.
