Sony has just announced that the PSP camera peripheral, dubbed Go!Cam, will be released on May 16th.

The camera will cost £34.99, and with a 4GB memory stick you'll be able to store over 40,000 photos. Of course, no digital camera would be complete without camcorder functionality, and Go!Cam is no exception. It comes with a built-in microphone and the ability to change the camera lens's direction vertically by 180 degrees, the the option to store up to two and a half hours of video.

Bundled with the camera will be Go!Edit, a software package that allows users to “enhance movies and photos with sounds and graphical effects,” according to Sony. You'll also be able to upload your creations directly onto the internet from the PSP, so expect YouTube to be flooded with movies from 14 year-olds shortly.

“With Summer around the corner and the ability to turn your PSP into a mini camcorder and capture all the best moments in your life, this is yet another reason to get a PSP and to take advantage of truly portable entertainment,” said the PSP's marketing manager, Stephane Hareau. “It demonstrates yet again the potential, versatility and evolving nature of PSP."

Sony's a bit keen on camera technology at the moment. Just last week it announced that the PlayStation Eye camera will launch this summer.

To SPOnG's eye the camera also fits nicely with Sony America's new strategy of aiming the PSP at the 'tweens audience. If you already own a PSP £34.99 is a small price to pay for a fully operational digital camera. It also plays well to younger audiences' fascination with social media such as MySpace and YouTube.

Back when Sony first showed off Go!Cam there was intriguing mention of a game designed specifically to use the camera. There was no mention of it in today's announcement and no comment was available at the time of press, but SPOnG's got its fingers crossed.
