"There has never been a portable game system like Game Boy Advance, and never has a game system launched into such a booming market," said Peter Main of Nintendo of America. "Our existing portable system, Game Boy Color, remains the fastest-selling video game platform in America, achieving all-time sales records even 11 years after introduction. Game Boy Advance will set brand new records."

Nintendo also showcased its latest hardware add-on, which comes from camera manufacturer Olympus. The unit will read paper data cards which can hold up to 4’000 bytes of information.

Acting as a memory card-cum-Master System card, the media will be able to hold game saves, character information and mini games.

"This is one of our many innovative and simple ideas which the new console will bring to game players and game software publishers," said Atsuo Asada, Nintendo Executive Vice President. "Game Boy Advance is designed to offer an alternative to users bewildered by all the sophisticated features hyped up for other game machines."

At the press conference, Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s General Manager, confirmed that five classic Nintendo titles were in development, all of which will definitely be released for the console.

They are:

Metroid
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario World
Yoshi’s Island
Yoshi’s Story

Iwata also confirmed that the entire back catalogue of Nintendo NES, SNES and even N64 games were being considered for a GBA re-release.

We will bring you news of the European release as soon as we can squeeze it out of Nintendo and in the meantime, try not to turn green!
