New Dark Arena Screenshots Released

First-person shooters become a reality on the Game Boy Advance.

England’s Crawfish Interactive has demonstrated a first-person shooter technical demo running on the Game Boy Advance. The first time a game of this genre has been seen on a handheld. Wipe saliva from side of mouth and continue reading.

Graphic State are the second company to release a technical demo of a FPS shooter running on the Advance and it looks even better than Crawfish’s early attempts. The level architecture is more detailed and complicated with more objects and structures present. The texture quality is of a higher resolution and looks impressive. Textures still need to be applied to the floors and ceilings, but that will come in time. In the final version of the game there will be four-player support and the game will run with a smooth frame-rate.

Graphic State is developing A3D, a proprietary engine, to further the development of Game Boy Advance titles. This system can use polygons to display 3D environments similar to a SNES with Super FX chip. They currently have demos of a racing car game and a space shooter that use this 3D engine. Dark Arena uses Graphic States’ Advanced Multi-Environment engine to display pseudo 3D graphics.

We can’t wait to play a multi-player shooting game say, on a bus journey or in the park on a sunny day.
