Uncover the secret history of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider: Chronicles -the latest adventure in the epic Tomb Raider series. Developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive, Chronicles will be available November 2000 for PlayStation, Dreamcast and PC CD Rom formats.
Lara Croft is missing in Egypt - presumed dead. Those closest to her gather together at the Croft Estate on a grey, rainy day for a memorial service in her honour. Afterwards, the friends sit quietly together in the study of Croft Manor and reminisce about Lara's past exploits; exploits that have until now remained a secret...
Chronicles comprises four separate adventures, each with it's own objective and unique game-play style. Introduced and linked via cinematic full-motion video sequences, the adventures give a new insight into the history of the world's most famous female adventurer. Locations include Rome, Russia, an Irish island and a hi-tech tower block.
Easing players into Chronicles, Rome incorporates an optional training area and features classic tomb-raiding action around its back-streets and catacombs. The adventure also features two of Lara's oldest enemies: Larson and Pierre. In a series of thrills and spills, the comedy duo battle it out with Lara for possession of the infamous Philosopher's stone.
The next episode marks a dramatic change: the sinister Russian naval base and U-boat levels lend themselves to a very intense and action-orientated style of game-play. Dressed in thermal camouflage gear, Lara must first explore the base before descending to the icy depths and the sunken U-boat in order to learn the fate of it's drowned souls.
For the first time in a Tomb Raider game, players are given the opportunity to play full levels as young Lara: the Irish adventure features mysterious goings-on and spooky apparitions on a small island. On a stormy night, Lara stows away on the local priest's boat in order to solve the mystery of the Black Isle. With no weapons available to her, Lara has to deal with the supernatural by setting traps, solving puzzles and keeping her wits about her.
Finally, Lara slips into a figure-hugging 'Matrix' style catsuit to manoeuvre around the futuristic tower block. These levels require stealth and strategy as well as guidance from Lara's companion, Zip, in order to deal with the high-tech systems involved.
New moves feature in all four adventures, enabling Lara to walk tightropes, swing from bars and reach new areas by firing ropes from the grappling-hook gun. Hand-to-hand combat also features for the first time: Lara may'sneak up behind sound-reactive enemies and disable them with either a cosh or chloroform. The new search option allows Lara to quickly search through drawers and files etc. collecting a wider variety of items in the process. Items are transferred directly into the inventory system and allow for a greater variation on the 'combine' option. Items themselves may also give Lara valuable clues to help her through the all-new adventures of Tomb Raider: Chronicles.
