Army Men: Air Attack 2 is a fast and furious game of toy helicopter-based combat set in the Army Men universe. It combines the trigger-twitching action of shooter-style game play with more strategic environment interaction via the winch mechanic. Continuing the classic struggle between the Green and Tan armies, the heroic Captain Blade and his Alpha Wolf Battalion once again take to the skies with new missions, deeper game play, stunning cinematics and more character interaction than ever before.
The nefarious General Plastro is using the portals between the Army Men ‘Their World’ and ‘Our World’ to gather huge supplies of plastic to feed the troop-churning factories that manufacture reinforcements and new weaponry. He’s enlisted the help of the villainous Baron von Beige to defeat Captain Blade and his Air Cavalry, who’ve been sent to put a stop to the General’s evil plans.
Army Men: Air Attack 2 has 26 new missions set in over ten unique and diverse environments, that include a Japanese Garden, the Wild West, the Flower Bed and your back garden. Seven of these are ‘Our World’ environments, where the figures are two and a half inches tall and interact with oversized objects in oversized settings. Ten of these environments have been specially designed for the five multi-player modes that include co-operative and head-to-head play. There are multiple levels of difficulty to enhance the replayability of each mission.
The mission objectives in Army Men: Air Attack 2 place more emphasis on the story line, with cut scenes, in-game voice-overs and film quality animation. Character interaction now adds an extra dimension to the game play, as communication with the co-pilots is now possible via a pop-up window.
The physics has been improved and this is clearly evident in the way that the helicopters, of which there are now five, handle. Each type of helicopter has its own unique abilities, with extra capabilities that can be unlocked via the new ‘plastic collection’ system, which also unlocks hidden vehicles. These improvements even allow for environmental factors, such as wind drag and ‘winch drag’ (when an object is being towed). This unique winch feature enables players to use winched objects like a wrecking ball or ‘throw’ items at enemies, as well as lifting, moving and dropping objects.
The pyrotechnic-based weapons include bottle rockets, Roman candles and cherry bombs and really show off the new particle special effects system, displaying some fantastic effects.
In addition to all of these features, the PlayStation 2 version has extra interior and exterior locations, such as Big Brother’s Room and the Miniature Golf Course. There is also the integration of larger world objects and ‘stackable’ world objects, which was not previously possible. Other features unique to the PlayStation 2 version include:
- HUD-less in-game player interface.
- Increased use of Portals.
- Algorithmically created unit AI.
Non-scripted real world forces effect on units (i.e. wind, gravity, fans).
- Advanced control functions enable players to take advantage of new analogue button technology.
Army Men: Air Attack 2 will see new characters added to the Army Men universe, such as Baron von Beige and Hooligan. There are also ‘boss’ characters to fight and more toy characters with which to battle and interact, making Army Men: Air Attack 2 the most immersive and exciting Army Men experience so far.
