The event, organised by Battletop.com; Asia's leading Internet rankings service, will take place in Korea's largest theme park, Everland in Yongin over a 9 day span, from October 7 to October 15, 2000.
Founded in the spirit of fair competition, world harmony and solidarity, the World Cyber Game Challenge, sponsored by Samsung Electronics, is a truly international game competition that will include the participation of 14 countries including the U.S.A., U.K., Japan, China, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Canada, France, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Mexico, and Bulgaria.
To select the world's top gamers, tournament qualifiers are in the process of being held. Completed U.S.A. West Coast trials were recently held on July 22. The next trials will be the U.S.A. East Coast qualifying event in Times Square on the 15-16 September, closely followed by qualifiers in Hong Kong on August 19-20, Beijing on August 20-27, the U.K. and Germany on September 9, and Japan on September 23-24.
The UK qualifying event will be held at the Millennium Dome, where winners will be awarded £15, 000 in prize money.
Approximately 200 qualifying gamers will be invited to the WCGC in Korea to compete in five official events - Quake III: Arena, Age of Empires II: Age of Kings, FIFA 2000, and Starcraft: Brood War. These world-best gamers will battle it out in heated competition to scoop the US$300,000 in prize money.
With the primary backing of Samsung Electronics, a world leader in the marketing of a full range of state-of-the-art electronics products, the World Cyber Game Challenge will kick off the establishment of an annual "World Cyber Games". To live up to its name as a truly worldwide event and the world's largest game competition, the number of participating countries, scope of events, and amount of prize money will be expanded with each passing year.
