Pick A Card, Any Card. Myth II: Soulblighter to support pantheon of high-end hardware.

CHICAGO—October 1, 1998—When Bungie Software’s upcoming real-time strategy title Myth II: Soulblighter ships later this year, its presentation of a totally immersive fantasy world will be enhanced with the best hardware in the business.

3D graphics acceleration will be covered with native support for 3Dfx’s Glide API and the recent addition of Microsoft’s Direct 3D, which adds support for cards from ATI, Matrox, nVidia and Rendition, among others. On the Macintosh, RAVE support is added to support ATI’s Rage Pro and Rage Fury cards. This is a substantial expansion of supported cards—when the game’s award-winning predecessor, Myth: The Fallen Lords shipped last year only Glide was supported out of the box.

In addition to the 3D terrain, persistent objects and particle system effects of the original game, Myth II: Soulblighter features many more 3D models, which can now animate to provide features like rotating windmills and moving drawbridges. A revamped magic system means many more transparency effects and particle systems filling the air, which can be thick with the smoke of 3D fires. While all of this plays fine with Bungie’s proprietary software rasterizer, graphics acceleration ensures that these effects fly along at breathtaking speeds.

But 3D graphics are only half of the picture. Myth II introduces 3D positional sound into the genre through support of Creative Labs Environmental Audio Extensions, and Aureal’s A3D. With these, Myth II is able to portray soundscapes that were impossible in the first game. When incoming mortar shells rip through the air and burst, the sound will be immediately recognizable as in front of or behind the player’s position. The indoor environments new to Myth II especially benefit from the reverb effects provided by EAX. The clash of swords against armor and the cries of warriors should sound much different in the stone hallways of a keep than in an open field, and significant details like this are brought into high relief by EAX.

According to Myth II technical lead Jason Regier, Myth II: Soulblighter “supports all the cool 3D hardware out there now, and is poised to take advantage of all the great products coming out this season for the hardcore gamer.”
