Kaarst, Germany, December 6, 2001 – THQ Wireless, a division of THQ Inc and Capcom Eurosoft Ltd, today announced an agreement granting THQ the rights to publish and distribute games based on the Street Fighter brand for WAP and SMS enabled mobile phone platforms across Europe.
Renowned for setting an early benchmark for the fighting game genre, Capcom’s Street Fighter has sold over 24 million units for home gaming platforms and generated over $1 billion since its launch 14 years ago. Street Fighter has extended beyond the reach of conventional games to become a cultural phenomenon spawning movies, comics and toys. Continual innovation has kept the franchise as fresh and relevant today as it was over a decade ago and the move to wireless platforms will continue this legacy.
Warthog, based in Cheadle, UK, has been contracted to create both WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) and SMS (Short Message Service) versions of the game, which will be published by THQ Wireless beginning early 2002. The games will feature all the regular Street Fighter characters with recognisable graphics in the WAP version. Players will be able to play against other wireless combatants or against the phone.
“Street Fighter is more than a game, it’s a legend,” said Tim Coupe Warthog’s VP of Mobile & Hand Held Devices. “The franchise has a history of pushing technology to improve gameplay and this will carry on with its transfer to mobile phones,” he added.
Adam Comiskey, European Director, THQ Wireless, commented, “Warthog has some of the most experienced wireless platform personnel and advanced wireless development capabilities available. This, combined with their proven ability to transfer intellectual properties across a range of wireless platforms made them a natural choice for the high-profile Street Fighter franchise.”
