THQ announced today that its action thriller Red Faction for the Sony PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system was the number one selling videogame in the country for the week of May 20-26. According to independent retail data from the NPD Group, Red Faction, which shipped to retail on May 22, sold through more than a projected 60,000 units in its first four days of availability.
“We are thrilled with consumer response to Red Faction for PlayStation 2,” said Brian Farrell, president and CEO, THQ. “As an internal developed brand boasting cutting-edge, proprietary technology, Red Faction represents an original intellectual property we intend to harvest through the next gaming cycle.”
“As soon as Red Faction hit our shelves, it was instantly the top-selling game for any system,” said Pete Roithmayr, vice president, merchandising, video game division at Electronics Boutique. “We anticipate Red Faction will remain a strong seller for the coming months.”
Not only are game enthusiasts showing their appreciation for the game at retail, but Red Faction is also garnering strong critical acclaim. The editors at Electronic Gaming Monthly say Red Faction is “one of the best reasons yet to own a PS2” and call the game’s Geo-Mod technology “an incredibly cool feature”.
Developed by THQ subsidiary, Volition Inc., the creators of Summoner, Red Faction delivers an adrenaline-pumping experience featuring intense action and an engaging story line built upon breakthrough technology. Volition’s proprietary Geo-Mod engine allows players to alter, deform and outright destroy the game environment in real-time-- for the first time ever in videogame history.
