Eidos plc ("Eidos") announces it has signed a deal with Celador International to publish both a sequel and a junior version of its video game based on the hit television series "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" This deal currently encompasses the UK, Germany and France, with other territories under consideration. The junior edition will be released this summer on PlayStation and PC and the sequel will be released this autumn on PlayStation 2, PlayStation and PC.
In the UK, the original video game "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?," has performed way beyond expectations since it was released on 29th September 2000. In only its second week of release the game created UK chart history by becoming the first ever title to top the All Formats, PlayStation, PC and Dreamcast charts in the same week. It has had a record 18 weeks at the No 1 spot on the All Formats charts. The game also became the fastest selling title to reach one million units sold in the UK and is now the biggest selling game ever in UK chart history ahead of Tomb Raider II and Tomb Raider.
In Germany, the original video game is the biggest selling PC and PlayStation title of 2001 so far. The French versions of the original game are due to be released on PC, PlayStation and Dreamcast during the Summer of 2001.
Jonathan Kemp, European Managing Director of Eidos says: "We are delighted to have secured the publishing rights to two completely new versions of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and to further strengthen our great working relationship with Celador. We will be aiming to continue the phenomenal success of what has become one of the videogame industry's strongest franchises".
Adrian Woolfe, commercial and marketing director at Celador International says: "We are delighted that the PC and Console versions of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? have been so well received in both of the markets in which they have launched.
