Sony has released a rather nice 'lifestyle' trailer that shows off some elements of the PlayStation 4 user interface. For once, it's not a lifestyle trailer that makes us want to punch our own faces in - and the console's OS looks rather swish as well.
Clearly picking up elements from Microsoft's advances in console UI from the Xbox 360 and running with it further, the PS4 looks like you'll be much more closely connected to your friends than you ever were on the PS3. The home page, for example, appears to have all kinds of updates and information on what your friends are doing.
You can 'Like' your mate's progress on certain games, easily watch videos and engage in cross-game chat. Probably some of the coolest elements of the UI from this video included the ability to instantly switch to gameplay after watching a user video, the option of downloading either the single-player or multi-player side of a game first, and accessing certain features on your smartphone.
Watch the video below. You can get a glimpse of some snapshots that solely focus on the UI in the gallery, by clicking the image.
I like the double-tap on the PS button to switch between game and XMB - the PS3 hold and wait for an age for XMB to load, and then longer still to get icons is a total PITA
