So much for every indie studio clamouring to work for Mark Pincus. Zynga last night announced that it was laying off some 500 staff and closing its New York, Los Angeles and Dallas offices. Today, rumours have surfaced that OMGPOP, the indie developer behind popular mobile game Draw Something, has also been shuttered.
If true, the closure of OMGPOP is pretty significant in the social and mobile gaming space. Only 15 months ago, Zynga - a large social and mobile publisher that cut its teeth on popular Facebook games - spent a colossal $180 million in acquiring the Draw Something studio.
But now, according to VentureBeat, OMGPOP's Twitter account posted, "this is the last day at Zynga for many OMGPOP staff," while studio exec Ali Nicolas reportedly added that she "learned via Facebook I was laid off today and OMGPOP office is closed."
