More Than 50% of Xbox Live Users Pay
An internal Microsoft spreadsheet from February 2008 has been 'reviewed' by the Seattle Post Intelligencer (aka The Microsoft Mercury or The Daily Balmer). The sheet, which Microsoft won't comment on, contains geographical breakdowns of XBL use.

The only breakdown we get to see is in the USA though.

For example, "56 percent of worldwide Xbox Live members paid an annual, three-month or monthly fee to use the service, down from 60 percent a year earlier..."

"...the percentage was higher in the U.S., where 60 percent of Xbox Live members paid for Xbox Live a year ago, a percentage that also remained relatively flat", says the SPI.

Microsoft doesn't usually issue such breakdowns, so you may have expected the company to ask for it back. Instead, it refuses to comment on the 'specific detail' but does take the opportunity of the leak of the internal document to point out that, "in January we had more new LIVE members join than any other month in the history of Xbox LIVE.

"With more than 17 million active members, a majority of whom are paying members, LIVE is a rich social entertainment and gaming experience that is unmatched in the industry."
