Summary

Bubble Bobble Double Shot's platformer/puzzler gameplay echoes its masterfully executed predecessor on DS, complete with all the secrets and bubbly gameplay that made the original such an addictive little beggar. It's another appealing slice of retro-flavoured gaming courtesy of Rising Star, with a little extra thrown in for longevity's sake.

Bubble Bobble Double Shot introduces some novel features to the original template. For example, players now have to switch characters during play to take out colour-coded enemies. Bub, Bob and new character Bubu each shoot bubbles in different hues, and can be switched with a tap of a shoulder button. A new star bubble has also been introduced which allows the player to change the colour of all enemies when the bubble is burst.

Also new is a fresh method of getting a chance to continue your game once all lives are lost. Several touchscreen-based minigames have been introduced, with the player taking on one at random to gain a chance to pick up the action where they left off. These include bubble-based puzzles and a hectic monster chase.

Moving beyond the 100-level single player mode, Bubble Bobble Double Shot's multiplayer expands on the multi-character model by offering co-operative play for up to three players. Taking opportunities for bubble harvesting and points-stealing to an entirely new level, simultaneous three-player action is a first for the BB series.
