Summary

Almost one year on from the release of the original, this superbike sequel makes its way to PC, promising a wealth of different gameplay modes, as well as plenty of updates and the general 'bigger, better, faster' kind of idea. The recent Xbox release of Ultimate Racing Technology 2 boasted online multiplayer support via Microsoft's new Xbox live service, and, thankfully, Climax have retained that element for the PC version, offering both LAN and Internet play for up to 16 players.

The general concept of the game is to put players in control of some of the most advanced racing machines on the planet and give them the chance to race like crazy across a total of 16 tracks. The fact that the game carries the official MotoGP licence means that both the bikes and the tracks are all faithfully recreated from their real life counterparts from the 2002 MotoGP series, thus adding a real sense of authenticity to the proceedings.

There are a total of eight different racing modes on offer, including Stunt, GP, Time Trial, Single Race, Tag, and, of course, the much vaunted Multiplayer. Like in the original game, these game modes can all be enjoyed with the standard MotoGP 500cc 2-stroke machines but now, thanks to an alteration of the official MotoGP rules, we now get to take advantage of the new 1000cc 4-strokes. Mmm, power!

As we have come to expect from game sequels, URT 2 comes complete with a host of graphical overhauls. Authentic lighting effects and variable weather conditions make for impressive racing environments, highly detailed models and new particle effects bring the vehicles to life. Combined with the game's ultra-realistic physics, it all makes for quite a believable experience.

MotoGP: Ultimate Racing Technology 2 is a lot more than just an update of the original. Everything from the crowd animations to the size of the tyres has been the recipient of much care and attention - more often than not from the suggestion of feedback from players of the original. The resulting game is an incredibly thorough and precise recreation of the two-wheeled motorsport.
