Summary

Run-of-the-mill RTS games. There's an abundance of them, hence the phrase. But regardless of their frequency, particularly on PC, they're still popular and still in heavy demand. And that's because the genre is diverse, including a variety of themes, play mechanics and a plethora of imaginative wartime stories. Next up is GMX's Battle Mages.

The setting for the game takes place in a fantasy world in which witches and wizards are the norm. There are several known races, each of them organised, keeping themselves to themselves, and defending their homes from outside interference. But all of this is thrown into chaos when a new evil threatens to kill them all. So throw on your cloak, learn a few spells and prepare yourself for a fantasy war of epic proportions.

But before you go to war, you must choose a race and learn the basics via a handy tutorial. As you learn the fundamentals of the game, such as clicking and dragging to command your troops, you'll quickly grasp how the game works. Soon you'll learn about magic and how crucial it is to progress through the game's hostile environments, and you'll become familiar with a variety of native beasts and foes.

In what's finally becoming standard in the RTS genre, Battle Mages has also been developed in full 3D. It boasts a high level of detail, good textures, and overall it looks the part. It's a convincing world, and one that'll take a great number of hours to get through. There are plenty of battles, lots of magic, a broad selection of allied units and troops and an epic and unpredictable story.

It's a standard RTS game, but a fine one at that.
