Summary

What will they come up with next? Train fanatics can now not only ride trains, spot trains, collect model railways and live out their train driver dreams on a computer-based train simulator, they can now build their own "virtual" model railway with this new sim from Australian developer Auran. Fantastic!

Quite simply, Trainz is a virtual model railroad, which enables the user to design, build and operate their very own virtual model rail world via the humble PC.

With this initial release made up of three integral components: My Collection, Surveyor and Driver, Trainz is heavily supported by the official website for downloads (models, scenery, and extras) and is set to receive expansion packs in the future.

My Collection provides a 3D virtual shed in which players can view their Trainz collection - panning, zooming and rotating around for that extra special enjoyment. Lovely!

Surveyor is the bit where you get to get your hands dirty with the planning, creating and editing of your virtual train sets. Via a simple, user-friendly interface, players can form terrain, place trackside objects, trees, buildings, bridges, tunnels and, of course, the track. Tracks can be built in a variety of geographical locations, including the busy East or West Coast USA, picturesque English countryside or even the harsh endless plains of the Australian outback. Once completed, cameras can be positioned around the tracks, so as to capture the locomotives in all their glory, as they thunder across the land. Magic!

Finally we have Driver. This is the best bit. Don your train driver's hat and get up there behind the, er, wheel (is it a wheel?) because it's time to actually drive the beasts! Selecting from either the official Trainz layouts or one created in Surveyor, players get to command their favourite engines around full 3D real-time environments, experiencing such delights as accurately modelled train physics, authentic engine sounds and a wide range of weather effects.

This is most definitely the ultimate model railway experience. Hardly the most striking of taglines, granted, but try and imagine the bloke who does voice-overs for Hollywood movie trailers saying it.
