Summary

The Evil Dead trilogy is a movie series that is very well known by most people. The original came in 1981, then two more followed in 1987 and 1993. But chainsaw-wielding Ash has now made the transition into video games with the help of THQ and developer VIS.

Assuming the role of Ash, players will find themselves pitted against the evil Necromonicon ex Mortis as they try to defend the ill-fated town of Dearborn from yet more impending doom. Okay, it’s not the inspired storyline you were all hoping for, but it suits Evil Dead down to the ground.

As a game, Boomstick is really quite simple. Like the film, it’s a hack ‘n’ slash extravaganza and nothing more. As players begin roaming the seemingly sparse environments of a virtual Dearborn, they soon find themselves surrounded by myriad zombies obsessed with human flesh. Some 50 enemies can appear on screen at any one time, so things can get a little crowded on occasion. Using weapons such as shovels, Gatling guns, shotguns and the infamous chainsaw, you must simply dismember them and proceed to the next stage of the game before the final showdown with the Necromonicon.

It’s not the most in-depth game you’ll ever play, but it is entertaining and the level of authenticity is surprising. Even the Bruce Campbell humour remains intact for Boomstick. Overall, it’s a cheap laugh, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
