Summary

In the absence of a World Rally Championship or V-Rally equivalent for PC, software behemoth Microsoft has produced a sound alternative in the guise of Colin McRae Rally 3 for PC. Console owners, here's what you're missing...

In terms of game structure, Rallisport Challenge is fundamentally the same as its rivals, except each aspect of this rally game is more extensive. There are four distinct rallying events present to race your Evolution VIs, Imprezas and Audis on. You have traditional Rally courses, Hill Climb events, Rallycross events and the formidable Ice Racing event.

These four racing categories are spread across a commendable 48 tracks and circuits and feature interactive environments and a deadly damage engine. Cars deform, glass shatters and there's even gradual performance degradation. Don't drive recklessly or you'll end up in the nearest hospital bed with a sling for each limb. Virtually speaking, of course.

The game engine itself is very good. Car physics and weather conditions work very well together, but you'll only get the full feel of rallying if you purchase a high quality controller or, ideally, a force feedback steering wheel.

The PC's most significant advantage over its TV-bound rivals is undoubtedly its visual capabilities. Even some of the cheapest graphics cards of 2002 are capable of outperforming consoles in almost every aspect. High-resolution visuals and full scene anti-aliasing make all the difference on a sharp, crisp monitor. It looks great.

Sure it's another rally game, but there's demand for them. And with games like Rallisport Challenge lurking on a shop shelf near you, it's not hard to see why.
