Summary

Games based upon the events from World War 2 are hugely popular with fans of the real-time strategy genre, and with demand for these games always on the increase, CDV sees fit to bring us WarCommander. It’s time to put the nazis out of their misery again.

In this particular interactive history lesson, you begin your quest at Omaha Beach with a single objective: to secure the area and penetrate as far as the German bunkers. Fighting with the American Infantry, you are needed to help swing the outcome of the war in your favour. You can’t do it alone, so you must work as part of a skilled team to obliterate the enemy. Are you up to the task?

Firstly, we have to say that WarCommander’s visuals are quite stunning. Despite being of the pre-rendered variety, textures are sharp and clean, and the level of detail is simply astounding. Combine that with hundreds of onscreen explosions and combat action, and you have something of a masterpiece.

WarCommander boasts a total of forty missions, spread across two unique campaigns that offer gamers a challenging experience, complete with a manageable learning curve for RTS newbies and an intuitive control system.

There’s the usual mind-boggling RTS features accompanying WarCommander, including 40 different ‘units’, 11 character classes impressive terrain, weather and lighting effects and an accomplished physics engine. And while these features are great for a single player game, it’s the multi-player option that makes WarCommander shine.

It seems it doesn’t matter how much effort you place into a single player campaign, nothing beats the unpredictable challenge offered from other human players. At the end of the day, it’s a game that hopefully millions of players are going to enjoy.
