Summary

It’s undeniable that the wrestling genre has come a long way, particularly since the arrival of 3D consoles. With the recent hits from THQ’s Smackdown series, it seems all developers are battling for a taste of the market. Electronic Arts’ reputation in the sports area of the industry is very prominent and influential, so with the release of WCW Backstage Assault, their contribution to the industry is set to grow that little bit more.

Introducing a new slant on the genre, WCW Backstage Assault takes wrestling out of the rule-ridden arena, and into the backstage. As a wrestling game, it comes as no surprise that there are over fifty world championship wrestlers available from the off set, including Goldberg, Sting and Vampiro. There are seven out-of-the-ring environments in total, each with their own set of props, including lead pipes and bathroom sinks (ouch!). Also players can use the environments as if they were rings, allowing you to bounce off rubber tires, among other things. Game modes include Hardcore Challenge, with both U.S and world championships available, giving you a chance to grab a spot in the Hall of Champions.

While WCW Backstage hasn’t been marketed to the extent of Smackdown, the EA name will no doubt give this game a place in the charts.
