Summary

Things seem to be pretty busy over at Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. Not only did 2018 see the release of Fist of the North Star, it also saw two new games in the Yakuza franchise and the middle of 2019 has a third landing on PS4s. This one's a bit of a novel take on Yakuza's world, bringing a detective's eye to the city of Kamurocho, along with an all-new lead and all new cast, not to mention a perfect point to jump in at.

You play as Takayuki Yagami, a defense lawyer turned private eye who uncovers a conspiracy while investigating the death of a Yakuza member. It puts you on the other side of the fence to other games in the series, and provides a new slant on the franchise as a result. As well as the usual free roaming exploration and street fighting, you'll engage in lines of questioning, go on stealthy tail missions and scour the environment for clues.

The city is as dense as ever and there are plenty of black holes to suck the hours out of your day. There are bars with real world whiskeys in them, fridges full of snack foods and weird/wonderful drinks, street food simmering in deep pools of oil, and that's before you even get on to the possibility of befriending the person serving you so that they might be called on to help in a street fight later. There's drone racing, there's pinball, there's a VR board game, there Club Sega arcades packed with all sorts of games-within-games. That's just a glimpse of the life bubbling away behind the surface of this world, but it gives you a pretty good sense of how much detail there is to grab your interest.

Fans will be pleased to hear that both English and the original Japanese dialogue tracks are available and that you can switch between them at any point during the game.

Whether you're an old fan or a new player, however, you'll find a fresh take on an old favourite in Judgment.
